Over the past 25 years, we’ve been at the forefront of an ongoing evolution in kitchen design, continually challenging conventions and innovating around these essential lifestyle spaces. Every year, we re-evaluate our position, and push the boundaries of progressing this important design discipline.

Kitchens: Our design philosophy

One of the main design challenges around re-creating or reconfiguring a space is the preconceived idea of how it must look or how it must be. At Project One, our entire working ethos relies on the pivot point of “everything and anything is possible”, the only hold backs are time, imagination and money.
So we start by taking into account how much imagination and money you would like us to pour into your project, then it’s time to unleash our passion and creativity on your space.

Houses are for living in, and today, the kitchen for many is a key room for connection, shared company, recreation… whether that is entertaining friends, enjoying a glass of wine, embracing culinary creation, immersing in a favourite novel, making espresso, or dining.

We ensure the design and build of your kitchen is informed by your lifestyle, not the installation of kitchen cabinets.

1. Understanding Your Lifestyle

We start by becoming your temporary best friends and making you one third of the design team. With this process we can get inside your lives, thoughts, needs and wants, so we can start to understand exactly how a dream lifestyle kitchen space would work and look for you.

2. Reimagining Your Space

Whether it’s integrating a hobby, a beloved collection, a family heirloom or providing the tools to express a certain culinary experience that you once had in a restaurant, we can start to build a framework and layout of a design that is bespoke to you.

Maybe you want a cinema zone, wine room or nightclub! Or perhaps a library and music wall is for you? You want it? We’ll design and build it!

After we have discussed how you use your home, how the other rooms are used and whether or not you need more space to create your dream kitchen, we either employ interior architecture to reconfigure the space and spaces around your kitchen; or architecture to extend the kitchen into the garden, sometimes taking some of the existing house too.

3. Collaborative Design

We operate with a design team of three components: designer + builder + YOU. We are not led by cabinetry, as is the normal approach for designing and building a kitchen. It is your lifestyle which is most important, so everything is bespoke around that.

Zone-based planning forms the underlying design principle, with differing yet perfectly integrated areas for everything you want to get from your kitchen.

When we design, we don’t do it with the thought of four walls, floor and ceiling. We implement our six wall design system where each flat surface represents an opportunity to create a breathtaking focal point of that particular part of the space.

We’ll create mood boards and schedules of goods to help bring it all to life, before work has even commenced.

4. Craftsmanship & Materials

We use only the finest Italian board materials to make our kitchens rather than using kitchen cabinet companies. This also gives us the flexibility to create the joinery at any size necessary to fill the space or to create the storage systems that are needed while being visually stunning

We also believe that over cabinetry is something that is the death knell for good design, so we use walk in larders, hidden utility rooms and other ingenious storage solutions, either highlighted within the kitchen design or behind hidden doors.

Whether cooking is not a priority and a budget friendly appliance from a manufacturer like Neff will suffice; or you would like to experience state-of-the-art cooking in a super wide custom Gaggenau oven stack, with integrated pizza oven, sous vide draw and seven chamber steam. Do you want a simple induction hob? Or teppanyaki, gas wok, induction and indoor barbecue domino range… Whatever your heart’s desire: we’ve got you covered.

All the goods we use are supplied by our direct accounts, which make a part of our pricing model more affordable than people at first think. Our costs are based on our design and the project management only.

OUR PROCESS

5. Engineering Excellence

Our in-house engineer has approximately five decades of experience. Any structural work carried out is always integrated into the ceiling so we lose no height and create no pillars or box work. Our average structural steel length in one year was 16 metres; so our teams have learned to work around this discipline to great effect.

We always imagine this part of the layout and elevation drawings as being the creation of a perfect doll (discussed with you in depth), before we finally dress it in the perfect clothes for your project.

6. Installation & Transformation

Once we have completed the initial consultation and design agreement, we will establish how you would like to stay abreast of the project.
Some clients like to keep away and return only to a completed masterpiece, others prefer to receive regular updates and share inspirations they have had.

We will adapt to you whilst maintaining our exacting standards, and either way our expert project management and meticulous craftsmanship will speak for itself come the end result.

Our main goal is to have an area of living that integrates the family at each meal, and at each point in the day when the room is being used. We want to enhance the overall feeling of tranquillity and connectedness flowing within the space, and so enhance your everyday lifestyle.

The history of the modern Kitchen

The first kitchen of significance on our historic research journey was George Browne’s stunning carved masterpiece in Troutbeck, Cumbria. This ground breaking use of space and exceptional joinery, with large cooking station, has everything except the family experience we use the island for in current design.

The farmhouse that homes this remarkable turning point in kitchen design evolution is now in the care of the National Trust.
We wonder what the Victorians would think of us spending most of our recreation time in the kitchen! They would not have been at ease with this, due to social conformities of the time.

The Frankfurt Kitchen

Troutbeck’s masterful nineteenth century innovation seems to have set the tone and pace of design until Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s invention of the Frankfurt Kitchen in 1926.
It introduced many stalwarts of what you would consider a “modern kitchen”, things like continuous countertops, clever storage drawers, fitted cabinets and splashbacks made from tiles – all working together in harmony.
Given the responsibility of creating a kitchen for social apartments, she saw the space as a “modern laboratory” where work could be performed efficiently and women could be liberated (to a degree!) to enjoy leisure, education and, of course, other duties! Margarete may have been progressive, but that did not extend to imagining men in the kitchen.

The Frankfurt Kitchen

Architectural and financial limits may have been major factors in the design, but they ran with it and championed it as a room created for women by a woman.

Yet it was all just marketing, wrote Schütte-Lihotzky in her memoir, Why I Became an Architect: “I never ran a household, never cooked, and never had any cooking experience prior to creating the Frankfurt Kitchen.”

Her insight was gleaned from interviewing housewives, carrying out time-motion studies and drawing inspiration from kitchen galleys on locomotives. It all added up to a narrow space where a woman could pivot from stove to sink in one movement, a place for everything and everything in its place.

A victim of her own success, Schütte-Lihotzky did not want to be typecast. A devout communist, she moved to the USSR to design new towns for workers, but there was one condition – no more kitchens!
The kitchen as we know it was invented by someone who didn’t use one and didn’t want to expand on the understanding of what the space could be. As great as the leap forward was from the George Browne kitchen, it still lacked in the social space we expect today.
