VICTORIA SQUARE BIO

The brief was simple, to keep the original period charm of this beautiful Victorian Penarth property built in 1852, and enhance the living experience with an extension housing a signature industrial open plan living space incorporating kitchen, snug, larder, cloak and utility.
This one started life with planning permission and engineering design for the rather large steel beams needed to open up the house.
The neighbour scuppered our original design with some unexpected structural work carried out on their adjacent property, so we creatively pivoted to restore the chimney section and create a barista area.
We love a challenge and an opportunity for an innovative and elegant solution.

Main Living Space

To get the opportunity to use all our key techniques, materials and classic composites in one truly original kitchen space was a gift and a blessing.
To protect this space for the foreseeable future all services were renewed and Control4 smart home was installed with a Dolby Atmos cinema and sixteen lighting zones.

Our two favourite touches were the disappearing door in the wall composite housing the fridge, leading into a secret larder, and the hand painted grills in the custom wallpaper ceiling raft.

The timber for the kitchen island was originally WWII landing strip made of spalted beech which was reclaimed in the mid 90s. It was handcrafted on site due to it’s size and weight.

The whole room flows from the island, spilling seamlessly across the floor composite, up the wall and across the ceiling in an explosion of subtle texture and colour.

FINALIST Global design awards

Innovative, flexible, professional and completely reliable. All qualities you would want for a major home improvement project.  Project One designed and developed our kitchen-diner rear extension after we were delighted with two bathroom refurbishments they had previously done for us.

They listened to our brief and designed a unique space which exceeded our expectations.

The design needed to adapt as we went along but we never felt we were not in control or being upsold. The budget remained clear and constrained throughout.

The workmanship of the subcontractors was uniformly excellent and the aftercare has been exemplary. They always respond promptly and taken responsibility for any minor issues that occur which is hugely reassuring.

We have returned to them for multiple further projects and will do so again.

They almost make knocking your house around fun. Almost.
